MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA – Local residents have watched the new Trader Joe’s on 1683 West Avenue sit fully stocked and ready to open for weeks, and the wait is nearly over. It was announced August 20th, that the Miami Beach location will open Tuesday, August 27th, at 9AM.
First announced in 2017, the store is part of the 17 West development, a new five-story building with 28,142 square feet of retail and restaurant space, 200 parking spots, as well as residential apartments.
This will be the second Trader Joe’s in Miami-Dade County, the first opened in Pinecrest in October 2013. The grocery store enjoys a cult-following and offers private label staple foods, organic foods and specialty products.
Competition will be fierce though as Fresh Market and two Publix supermarkets are practically in eye-sight, as well as a Whole Foods less than a mile down the road.
However Trader Joe’s reportedly keeps prices down because eighty percent of their products are in-house, allowing the grocer to sell them at lower prices. The supermarket chain also buys goods directly from suppliers, cutting out the middlemen who can drive up costs.
Legend has it that the first Trader Joe’s store was opened by founder Joe Coulombe in 1967 in Pasadena, California. There are 488 locations as of 2019, and the current Chairman & CEO is Dan Bane.
Public information is sparse though, as the company is privately owned by T.A.C.T. Holding, Inc, which is owned by ALDI Nord, part of a German family-owned discount supermarket chain with estimated €50 billion in sales.
The Miami Beach Trader Joe’s grand opening on August 27th will follow a short ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:55 AM, and then proceed with a celebration including live music, food tastings, giveaways, and more. The store will be open daily from 9AM to 9PM.
