MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA – This Saturday May 11th, from 11AM to 6PM The Fountainhead presents the first ever “Artists Open” event. The art extravaganza is taking place in locations all over Miami-Dade county, where over 250 artists in nineteen different complexes will open the doors to their studios to the public.
The mission of the initiative, supported also by the Knight Foundation, is to close the gap between artists and audience, in order to bring art to a closer and more familiar place in the public’s life. There is no admission fee for entrance to any of the studios.
Kathryn Mikesell, Co-founder and Executive Director of Fountainhead said, “intimate access to artists and art opens people’s minds to the value of diversity and fosters dialogue, creating a more tolerant, engaged and inspired world. To have a voice, artists need a sustainable career. To be heard and to affect change, artists need a broad audience.”
The studio in Miami Beach participating in Artists Open is Oolite Arts, located at 924 Lincoln Rd. A few other studios participating in Miami are: Bridge Red Art Complex, ArtHood 56, Mana Contemporary 777, Void Projects and Dimension Variable. The later is also celebrating its opening night and will only be open from 6PM until 10PM.
The Fountainhead was founded in 2008 as a space and community to support the growth of artists in Miami, as well as connect them with a local and an international audience.
Their vision is to create an organization that “cultivates new audiences for the arts and collaborates with institutions and businesses supporting the growth of Miami’s art and cultural community building a global family that transcends all borders and continues to give back.”
The Fountainhead consists of two spaces, the Studios and the Residency. The Fountainhead Studios are located in Little Haiti and provides affordable workspace for Miami artists of all backgrounds. In addition it supports the idea of a community, since about twenty artists work at the space simultaneously.
The Fountainhead Residency is a space in Miami that showcases the work of three or four international artists every month. Up to date, over 370 artists from 43 countries have shown their work here.
