MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA – Spring might not officially start around the world until March 21st, but since Miami is blessed with spectacular weather, spring here begins at the end of February.
From then on to the last week of March a myriad of events catered to party, music, fun and sun take place in Miami and Miami Beach, which makes the city a spring-break target for thousands of college students across the nation, and even the world.
Though this might sound like a city’s dream, to be overflowing with tourists and events, it is far from it. So much that according to the Miami new Times, the city spent $33,000 on a campaign for tourists not to come.
The campaign features slogans like “Choose Your Bars Wisely,’ as in a pun between jail bars and actual bars, and “Come on Vacation, Don’t Leave on Probation.”
In addition, the Chief of Police Daniel Oates, wrote a letter to more than 200 universities in Florida and Georgia with a message from the Police Department, advising their students: “If you come to Miami Beach for Spring Break, you must obey our laws. If you do not, you will be arrested.”
Although it might seem peculiar that a city does not welcome tourists, situation in Miami Beach have gotten out of hand with drunken and under age behavior. For a month pool parties, DJ’s beach parties and of course ULTRA Music Festival and WMC (Winter Music Conference) will take over, and yes, like the city, it is better to be prepared.
As the Sherbrooke Hotel (located in Ocean Dr.), Mitch Novick, bluntly put it in words “This place is turning into a sh*thole.” He was referring to Miami Beach during Spring Break.
Traffic is usually very congested, and parking, valets and even Uber raises their prices astronomically, and so do many locales. Even if they are not participating in any of the spring break events, most bars, clubs, etc. have increased entrance fee and sometimes purchasing tickets in advance is needed.
Staying away from crowds is practically impossible this time of the year, but the safest bet to enjoy March around the beach is to stay above 60th St, and try to enjoy North Miami Beach.
A great option for the day is the Carrillon Hotel & Spa. This beachfront hotel is known for its elegant and tranquil atmosphere, with one of the top spas in the city. A day relaxing on the beach and enjoying the spa is sure to be quite gratifying.
At night there are several options that promise a good time far away from the spring breakers crowd. For example, Le Sireneuse at the Four Seasons Hotel in Surfside is a very popular Champagne Bar with a dolce vita vibe and spectacular food as well.
Miami, and South Beach especially, are known around the world for its endless parties, beautiful beaches and both combined. It is without a question a top destination for party people around the world, from the most elitist to the simplest of folks.
In no other time this is more evident, than as soon as the last week of February arrives. But do not despair; it is possible to enjoy the city and its beaches during that time without getting lost in the mayhem.
